Surface Treatment Technology of Stamping Dies

Stamping dies in addition to required the mold substrate material has high strength and obdurability coordination during working, mold’s surface performance is also critical importance for working properties and tooling life time. These surface performance including: wear-resistance, corrosion-resistance, friction factors and fatigue properties etc. Through surface treatment technology, the stamping dies surface performance can be improved, and the mold life time can be extending.

Mold’s surface treatment are through surface coating, surface modification and composite process technology to change the mold surface form, chemical components, texture and stress status, then to obtains good surface performance’s system projects. There has three kinds of surface treatment technologies that most commonly used in mold manufacturing:

Nitriding:

Nitriding is the earliest and most common technology that applied in stamping dies surface treatment. It can forming good surface performance and good coordination with mold steel quenching processing, also the nitriding don’t need high tensity cooling because nitridation has low temperature, and the mold only have tiny deformation.

Carburizing:

The purpose of stamping dies carburizing is to improve the molds whole obdurability, means the mold work surface have high strength and good wear-resistance properties. The reason of using this method is that the lower level material can instead of higher level material through carburizing quenching, then reduce mold manufacturing cost.

Hard coating film deposition:

This technology is applied to stamping dies since 1980s. Under current technical conditions, there has high cost to using hard coating film deposition technology (mainly equipment cost), so it still only applied on some precision, long life stamping dies
